Reading my Twitter time line is hilarious. I have a lot of sports journalists and SEC types on there. Can't believe it.

i told yall that norfolk state was better then a 15 seed..this didnt shock me. Been saying this would happen for them..in they bigger enough to run with florida too...
In they made up for a money game with this win

Great coaching and effort.. The norfolk coach did a great job with subs and didnt timeout his own team to death.. He allowed his players to keep playing. Timely shooting and great hustle

@darrenrovell: Athletic Department Budget: Missouri ($58.9M) vs. Norfolk State ($10M)

Some seem to be genuinely happy for Norfolk State though.

Norfolk State is gonna have to come out the pockets to keep that coach like VCU did last year lol

But Missouri's weakness (guard oriented team) played into one of NSU's strength: OQuinn who stock in the NBA is going thru the roof now

I've long said that the best chance for HBCUs to compete with the big schools is through basketball.

It may be a good idea for some HBCU AD to make a serious investment in basketball. That's the quickest way to compete on a somewhat level playing field.

I agree with The Founder. It's baseball. It's easy for schools like Gonzaga and Butler (non-football schools) to invest in basketball but when we all are football schools as well, it's not that easy.

I do agree that, although college basketball is becoming like football with the cartel like hold on the Big Dance (No mid-majors were 1-4 seeds in the 4 brackets), it can be easier IF we can get good players with good coaching and convince some of these high school players that you can come and start for us right away rather than sit on the bench for 2-4 years at the big boys...

P.S. Watching Norfolk State break Missouri's press made me :(

Baseball is not a money sport. Building a strong baseball program will not add dollars to the athletic budget and will do little for the visibility of a HBCU.

It takes depth to consistently win at the national level. Obviously coaching matter, but if you want to make a run in any tournament for compete nationally, you have to acquire quality depth. That is the only way to beat the different type of teams you will face down the road. In baseball, the SWAC doesn't have quality pitching depth.

In basketball, you need to be able to beat teams on both ends of floor and on the inside and outside. That's why NSU won today. Their big play well and their wing players hit threes. I've always said, that in order for mid-majors to win in the NCAA tournament they have to win the three-point line. NSU won it today as well as the inside.

I told you and the rest of the board that this team is much better then a swac team

CONGRATULATIONS NSU!!!!!!!!!!!

They have a great center - as long as they keep him near that basket - he is the man.

LUCK OF THE IRISH - Kyle O'Quinn - as irish of a name as you can get.... HAPPY ST. PATS DAY.... :lmao:

His dad was so cool - after he made a big play looks like he said, that's my boy!!! PROUD FATHER!!!

Congrats Norfolk State...

Anyway I have to agree with SUjagfan... Because basketball offers more opportunities on a large scale to be in the national lime light moreso than baseball. NCAA Basketball Tournament is talked about on all media networks both tv and radio that does not even have sports programming. How many networks carry the NCAA Baseball playoffs? NCAA baseball just does not generate much hype and buzz as the NCAA Basketball tournament. How much does a power 6 school payout to a mid-major HBCU as compared to a basketball payout? The notoriety is so much greater for basketball than baseball. Basketball is the ticket to prime time for HBCU's just by the nature of it. Now that Norfolk State has upset Mizzou. Watch all the networks show where Norfolk State will be featured as knocking off the number 3 school in the nation. I remember when UAPB beat Winthrop in the playin game. For 3 days UAPB was on every major news and sportsnetwork, both TV and the internet.Basically the share of the financial pie is much bigger in NCAA basketball than baseball and even football at the mid major level.

Not so fast. Florida's problem isn't size as they have played teams with more size than them and did well against them(Alabama, Tennessee, Vanderbilt, Syracuse, Ohio State, Florida State, Arizona, and Kentucky. Their problem is teams with size that have a high skill level(Kentucky). Florida showed against Virginia that they don't need to make 10+ 3's to win games. Norfolk's best chance is to hope that Florida has another cold shooting day from 3, because if they shoot at their normal percentage from 3, they are next to unbeatable. Florida doesn't turnover the ball much, and they also do well from the free throw line. Beal and Boynton are going to torch their defense. And Erik Murphy is a matchup nightmare.

I agree with both are easier to fund than Football.

I live here in VA and I hope now Norfolk St. get the same coverage as VCU.

Florida and Missouri have some similarities in style of play, but Florida does have an effective post game and will Pick and Roll and High Ball Screen you to death. I think Norfolk will have a lot of trouble with Beal and his slashing ability.

This video was taken in the mall in downtown Norfolk, VA.
