KEYS: Pugh takes on a tough assignment

Monday afternoon, less than a week into her new role as the interim athletic director at Southern University, Sandy Pugh was all smiles.

Above her head, sunlight poked through a field of fast-moving clouds. All around her, trees swayed in a strong breeze. What a day it was.

“I want people to believe some fantastic things are getting ready to happen,â€￾ she said. “It’s a beautiful day here at Southern.â€￾

Lately, fewer and fewer people are able to share Pugh’s sunny disposition.

Who could blame them?

After all, this has been the wildest, most disturbing year in the history of Southern athletics.

The football team posted its worst record ever, going 2-9. The men’s basketball team posted its worst record ever for the third straight year, going 4-26, and coach Rob Spivery was fired.

Just last week, the university felt compelled to fire Greg LaFleur as athletic director, three days after his arrest on a misdemeanor prostitution count in Houston (he is scheduled to appear in Harris County Criminal Court on April 19).

And lest anyone forget, Chancellor Kofi Lomotey has announced his resignation, effective June 30.

I didn't know SU in Shreveport was on the chopping block, or the Times Picayune is reporting false info.

Stop starting stuff. That story said nothing about the Shreveport campus being on anybody's chopping block. You need to worry about Grambling. We ALL saw GSU's name on Jindal's chopping list!

I'm referring to TexasTerror's link and i said that because they have just built dorms on SU Shreveport's campus stop being so damn sensitive and offensive. Wasn't being funny at all. WOW.

Southern’s athletic struggles likely take a back seat in most minds, with campuses in New Orleans and Shreveport facing merger or relocation and cuts to higher education spending across the state. But many believe LaFleur’s arrest damaged the university’s reputation.

Came from the link TexasTerror posted: http://www.nola.com/bayouclassic/ind...eeks_to_f.html

Lafleur is a Tiger not a Jag lol. If anything it damaged them.

I'm saying that's false info on the Times Picayune behalf, SU Shreveport isn't up to get cut, only SUNO and UNO. The media tends to add more fuel to the fire when writing something about HBCU's. LaFleur isn't at fault for none of that.

I know but that Lafleur situation didnt bother me. It had no affect on SU. Lafluer did that not SU. Thats on him.

I think it was a grammatical mistake. If you read the paragraph... a single punctuation could of made a difference - since the Shreveport campus is facing cuts to higher education (just like everyone else in the state). Unless there is some relocation that I am not sure about - but there has been mention of further mergers in northern Louisiana amongst the higher education institutions.

Where is the beauty in any of the above?:noidea: Is this woman delusional or something?

They just flat out lied, point blank lol. Who would they merge SU Shreveport with? Centenary, hell no? LSUS, probably not.

Centenary is a private school...dude! arent you from shreveport too? you looking real unfamiliar right now "home"boy.

I asked a legit question. You had your worst football season in history and your worst basketball season in history, yet this is a "beautiful day"?! Please enlighten me.

They feel like LaFleur was the reason for a lot of the negative energy in athletics at SU and with him gone improvements will happen at least that's the sentiment i get from the jags.

LaFleur should have never been hired. SU is better off with him gone! now we can hire someone competent who will get donors/alumni/sponors/etc to open their wallets.

I don't recall LeFleur missing one basket or making one football pass on the field, so that excuse won't fly right here. Some folks may be naive enough to believe that nonsense, but not here.

By the way, wasn't LeFleur there when Pete went 8-3? Yall can't blame EVERYTHING on the man.:smh:

Already know that, but that excuse is lame. Who was AD when the women won the SWAC? Does LeFleur get credit for that?

Hmmm...

Southern folks, what exactly did Lefleur do that caused your football and basketball teams to suck?
