Landrieu is the first White mayor of New Orleans in 32 years.

NEW ORLEANS - For the first time since 1978, New Orleans will have a white mayor. Shortly after the polls closed, Lt. Gov. Mitch Landrieu, a two-time loser to capture City Hall, won the election in a run-away, burying the field early.

Greg Rigamer, WWL-TV elections analyst, projected Landrieu the winner 35 minutes after the polls closed.

It was Landrieu’s father, Maurice “Moon†Landrieu, was New Orleans last white mayor.

“Everything that I am looking at tells me that Landrieu will be the next mayor,†said Rigamer at 8:35 p.m. The quick call rippled around the campaign headquarters of several candidates as one, John Georges, gave his concession speech less than an hour after the polls closed.

“This has never been about me, it was never about Mitch or Rob or James or Troy or Nadine. It’s been about the people of New Orleans and how bad we need leadership and we change in our city. It’s about the crime problem that needs to be addressed. It’s been about the potholes and the hospitals that need to be opened and I’ve been assured, Mayor-elect Landrieu said he’s going to get to work right away on those problems.â€

A sign of modernity in the race, candidate Rob Couhig conceded the race via Twitter shortly after 9 p.m.

The night before qualifying Landrieu was a surprising late entry in the race, after saying earlier that he would not run for mayor. His entry had an almost immediate impact as Leslie Jacobs dropped out of the race shortly thereafter and state Sen. Ed Murray, considered a front-runner, also dropped out of the race, after seeing polling data that had Landrieu running far in front.

Can he do any worse than Nagin?

This election had nothing to do with Ray Nagin. It was about white people in New Orleans wanting to see a white man be mayor so bad they would have voted Adolf Hitler in office. Also, I can’t stand the Landrieu name because it is synonymous with black exploitation.

Without overwhelming black support he still wouldn't have pulled this off. He apparently got 62% of the black vote. Nagin must have did pretty damn bad down there that even the favorite black candidate dropped out of the race.

Winning votes heavily across all segments of the city, analysts were able to call the race so early as Landrieu ran way in front among almost all demographics: Republicans, Democrats, women, men, white voters and black voters.

Rigamer projected that Landrieu would draw 62 percent of black voters and 69 percent of white voters.

I wonder if he will try harder in bringing people home than in my opinion his sister, the senior senator, has.

This was going through my mind.

Oh well here's to a new New Orleans! but with an old school feel. :retard:

Again what does Nagin have to do with this. Nagin was not running. So the people of New Orleans think that no black person can be mayor because of one black man. Also I find it very “unusualâ€￾ the reasons Ed Murray gave for quitting the race--to avoid a “racially divisiveâ€￾ contest. Murray was the front runner 3 days before the election. C’mon man.

Most people want to blame Ray Nagin for Katina. You can’t blame Nagin, Kathleen Blanco, or Geogre Bush. The blame needs to go to Moon Landrieu and that mofo serving time in Oakdale, Edwin Edwards because of their neglect. I don’t live in New Orleans so if they are happy I am happy. Who’s next David Duke.

what problem do you have with Mitch?

I don’t agree with his sister or his father so why should I expect anything different for him. Just like you don’t expect anything different from another black man because of Ray Nagin. I am not judging him on the color of his skin, maybe the content of his family’s character. Is that right maybe not? But he is the mayor of New Orleans because of somebody who was not running, that’s my problem. I don’t feel this election was legit but I have no roof of that. That’s just the way I feel. Also, you said you where paid by a Landrieu so I don’t expect for you agree with me even if you though I was right. We are wasting time on this point.

I never said that I don't trust anyone else black because of Nagin. I just said that he has to better than Sugar Ray Nagin. Also, I think Mitch would have beat Ed Murray too. Mitch has national support.,

On top of that of all the early votes cast, Mitch had 10,000votes off the bat when they started counting them. And yes, the black vote carried him in.

That's what I was about to comment on.
How can it be just white people wanting a white mayor at all cost when this guy got over 60% of the black voters in his final count.

Could it be the people living in New orleans at this time just wanted to try something new?:noidea:

What is your problem with Mitch? As Lt.Governor he did and continues to do the things to get New Orleans back on the map. With him being the new Mayor is what New Orleans needs in our recovery. Yes, I said recovery and Hurricane Katrina happened five years ago come this August. I'm not blaming Nagin for Katrina, but he needs to be held accountable for his actions which held the recovery of New Orleans down. I can bet Mitch will get a whole lot more done in his first six months than what has been done these last four years. As far as Edwin Edwards I really feel the man could run against Jindal and win.

I have to be honest, I am and will always be pro-black, but I have to be honest, I am tired of black politicians screwing us over. Man our mayors are screwing us over worst than anyone. It is sad. Why keep voting them in when we aren't getting results? It is a shame starting from Atl to Detroit. Sad, very sad. Give me someone that will bring results, than someone who tells me lies and smiles. If you are a Mayor of a major city with a large black population, you owe it to the people who got you in to reduce crime and create jobs. Gone are the days of Harold Washington, Andrew Young and Maynard Jackson.

Landrieu got some black in him anyway, according to rumors around town. I've heard that for the past 20+ years.

I will leave the “white saviorâ€￾ alone since it breaks you black folk heart to hear somebody criticize the Landrieu name. Again I don’t live in New Orleans and I am not a Democrat. The problem I have with Landrieu, I have stated I don’t like the Landrieu name. But Landrieu being mayor is not my biggest problem. The title of this thread is “Landrieu is first White mayor of New Orleans in 32 years.â€￾ Like that is a good thing. So what’s next the black folks in New Orleans are going to be in the streets dancing when they see the confederate flag? I have not seen one of those in a long time either but I am not going to be jumping for joy when I do. So the black folks in New Orleans need the white man to come in and straighten things out because black folks can’t do it on they own. That is what Mary Landrieu said when she and Cleo Fields were running for that senate seat a few years back. That is a big problem to me. But I do want you to tell me in six months what is different about New Orleans than before and be specific with no political spin. I am very curious to hear your answer.
