:lecture:My name is MustardmanSU_04, and I condone hazing.:lecture: Just be smart about it folks. If I was the BD, I would have a freshman bootcamp program setup. Nobody if FORCING you to do anything, and you can opt out at ANY time. I am sure that there is still a legal way to break these lil' chumps off, and instill a sense of pride into them, because they had to WORK for something. (Get a team of the students studying law that are in the band to do some damn research and find the limits/boundaries..... Get the ROTC kids to explain how they run things there). Just playing your horn IS NOT earning your scholarship... Just marching is not enough... There are MANY poeple in the world who can do one or the other of those things, or both, but music is a passion, so HOW PASSIONATE ARE YOU?:noidea: That's MY mindset. Put that scholarship on the line, and see how many parents whine and complain THEN. It's a recession folks....... (You mean, you tryna quit the band/snitch/whine/complain over some damn pushups/crunches/running?! Do what you do boy, but if you lose that damn scholarship, yo broke-ass aint comin back to live wit' ME!)
 
Just my personal opinion (NOT the opinion of the Prairie View A&M University Marching Storm), if a freshman or an oldhead show that they are unworthy of donning the uniform of the Marching Band they call themselves representing, they SHOULD have their band scholarship revoked (assuming that they are on a scholarship), and give it to a worthy bandsman.

Half-assers and shammers really are gonna be the end of band, as we know it. These days, bands are full of those kinds of undedicated bandsmen, who can't withstand any kind of obstacle, and the bands suffer. They are almost like a virus...and need to be eliminated.

That is MY view also, and it was the view of Dr. Greggs. Doc aint give 2 shits... There's a story of him zipping someone from the band for piling too much food on a plate at a buffet..... Freshmen SHOULD be uncomfortable. Hell, upperclassmen too! But, ESPECIALLY freshmen. I know at Southern, freshmen week at bandcamp was like another audition process. You had to make it past Hump-day first, and then survive till' the end of the week.

You are right about that....

But you also had a lot more cats that knew the deal back then too... Just like we have soft freshman and upperclassmen now.. we had a few back then, it just wasn't many of them.. Them the main ones that would see someone from another program degrade their program and say nothing, but then get around us old heads and want to reminisce.....smh

That's one reason I am sort of glad we didn't have KKpsi when I was there now that I look back at it... We all knew who the real horses were in the band and the ones that really cared for the band.. I will say this.. only a few of them road bus1 (during my time)...

When did KKPsi come on the yard at SU? I am not from the same generation as you, and frankly, I never planned on attending Southern until like the last 3months of my senior year of HS (Decided to start my own legacy and be the first from my city to go, instead of following everyone else to JSU or FAMU) so I'm not up on ALL of the history....

But anyways...... We all know the old adage...... REAL RECOGNIZE REAL. Even if I was crabbing now, I would be shaving my head for ME. I saw pics of SU, and the wasn't a single bald head...... SHAMEFUL. The only way I knew who was crabs was because the band was wearing travel suits, and I know the subtle things to look for.

So why would have KKPSI been an issue in the Juke during your time? Don't you think Doc would have picked the ones HE wanted to be PSI as he had always done and would zip any one of them like he had always done if they did not live up to their responsibilities? Just aint understanding your disdain for PSI when they were not even in the band back then.

Aint nothing wrong with Psi leading the band if the LEADERS of the Band meaning the band staff has allowed the right ones in the organization and are willing to get rid of the ones that aint doing what they supposed to do. Aint nothing different about that no matter what era it is. I would assume those on Bus 1 during your time would have been prime PSI candidates if Doc had wanted to have PSI then.

It didn't come back on the yard until 02' I was good and graduated by then...lol

I still remember my crab year.. when we decided the day of the Bayou BOTB to not shave our heads... after doing it the entire season....lol (Yeah we were stupid)..

But my HS section leader who was also over the section at SU at the time pulled me to the side to tell me he was dissapointed and asked me "why would you want to look like the upperclassmen YOUR crab year"... It all made perfect sense then... besides the fact other tactics were used to get that hair off of our heads...lol

1973. Mr. Knighten and Mr. Jackson are charter members along with folks like former assistant Roy Johnson.

They last line before 2002 was 1993. Bachmegatone who posts on here was on that 02 line.

I don't have disdain for PSI.. I just have it for what it did the band after my time..

The love of SU BAND was in a way lost... There was no more such thing as NUT brothers... I used to come around the band hall and didn't feel the same unity we had when I was there..

Like you say, DOC would have picked the members when I was there... And we all in the band during that time pretty much know who they would have been... The few he selected to play in his stage band.. The few he always had in his company and the few he did select when he did decide to bring it back.. Being that I had one CB left in the band at the time who also rode BUS2 (Xavier).. I already knew he would be selected... But that year most of my class graduated school by then.
In short... MOST of our BUS2 would have been PSI, I know this.

They way bus2 operated, we ain't go around flaunting letters, EXCLUDING folk and leaving them to dry on out of town trips to find other members of our organization... It was like a one HUGE family...
I still remember the trip to the CCC my senior year.. We all took over downtown.. took over the mall.... No one felt left out...

GRAM used to have all those issues WITH KKpsi during my time and I know we ain't want their end product...

Knowing the guys that are KKpsi during your tenture JR it was different, because the guys from yur time I know... I know LOVED SU band and didn't leave none of their brother either Psi or not out to dry... I see it in them even today...

The kids I saw with KKpsi after my time were almost a replica of what was going on at GSU.. and according to SU standards it did show. We all know those wasn't DOC best years as head...

And that was about the ONLY good line during the new era.... It was only so much them cats that marched during my time could do... Because they were just about out the door as soon as they pledged...

And you assumed very wrong.. Bus 1 cats were nothing more than the cats who didn't get selected to ride bus 2 and the very few we didn't have room for on bus 2..


Doc ain't give a dayum who rode bus1 as long as you STFU on the bus trips...

Matter of fact the few that were on BUS 1 that Doc may have considered were Phi Mu Alpha

But that only explains why you don't understand what BUS2 was during my day.. Like I told one time before.. BUS2 selected the BEST out of each section.. meaning the leaders...
TJ only rode bus1 because some Baton Rouge thing that was going on that he could not get out of....lol Ultimately BUs1 began Wonder Family which really meant "Baton Rouge Folk and Friends"....

WOW. SMH at how Doc allowed that Bus 2 thing to become what it did during your time even without the Frat being around. You would have thought he would have wanted the leaders of the band on the bus with him. He wouldn't have to tell them to STFU if they were really leaders and the best in the band. Obviously they would have had respect for him and not cause him to want them on another bus just for peace and quiet.

Bus 2 during my era were the upperclassmen that were not PSI, Bus 3 were the crabs and Bus 4 were the dolls, a few upperclassmen(ones who didn't want to deal with Bus 2) and crabs.

Bus 1 was the KKPSI bus. We handpicked some crabs as the year went on to ride on Bus 1 based on their leadership potential and their bandmanship so we could determine if they would be worthy of even pledging PSI.

I do know this.....there were a bunch of your crab brothers and other folks in the band during that era that used to ask us old head PSI when they saw us to talk to Doc to bring PSI back to the band. So I am sure a ton of your BUS2 mates wanted to be KKPSI. But didn't have the opportunity to do so.

Stop. Then
  1. put them in writing, being very explicit;
  2. have the legal staff of the university review them and give their approval;
  3. review them with your band staff; only band staff can invoke disciplines;
  4. prospective band members must sign them in order to be considered; underage members require the signature of their parents.

Problem solved. We do this at our local HS. The students get PE credit for being in marching band. So, laps, crunches, and everything else that can be attributed to PE goes. We have certified nursing professionals at every rehearsal to make sure that nothing is out of order.

From reading this, I think this is the reason why we bump heads when it comes to "our" band...

Your day BUS1 was hand picked... My day BUS2 was hand picked...BUS3 crabs and BUS4 dolls and reserves...lol
VERY true many of us wanted to have KKpsi back MAINLY because our past relatives and close friends were KKpsi..

Who do you think we were mentored by before we got to SU?...lol

I mean I hear you brag about no girls... but understand I was in a band with 1 girl who you forgot was a girl most the time up to my last year where it was only about 4 total.. So it wasn't no big difference...

That's why BUS2 had the approach you all had.... Only difference was, you all had letters and other bands with the same letters... But with 2 we were more of us sticking together...
And that's the main difference you see across the board...

Trumpet section leader this year at SU is your homeboy from Jackson (Callaway)... I like his attitude... My CB was telling me, that cat act the same way you were on your last rip...lol But that's refreshing to see that cat care that much about the "BAND"....

I'm not understanding that...

Without the organization of BUS2 and the continuation of KKpsi.. SU band wouldn't been as great .. please believe that.

The reason I was smh is even if Doc didn't have KKPSI. He could have still had Bus1 be what Bus2 turned into. He could have said, I want all my leaders on the Bus with me. That was my point. Had nothing to do with him not allowing any more pledge lines at SU for awhile. Which I still think in my mind was a mistake. But that is a topic I will not debate in this forum.

Don't know where the no girls comment came from. Didn't mention it in my posts today. I haven't met a Juke yet that marched with no women who don't hold it dear to the heart. But actually I am one of the few old heads who really didn't beyotch about it when it happened. I was like it aint that many no way. So it is all good. So I am one of the few who has never given any SU band grief about the girl thing. I knew it was coming before I left SU since us and Texas A&M were the last bands to be all male. But they ended up getting sued during my time at SU and a girl was allowed in the Corp over there. So I was like if that happened to them......it will soon happen to us. No biggie. Some of your own homeboys from back in the day still hate that even one female is in the Juke. LOL.

Glad to know some Callaway folks still rolling on to SU. He had the good sense to be a Juke and not stay at the crib I see. :D I will have to introduce myself to him. Sounds like a standup cat. :D

My HS Alma mata supposed to be going to watch SU practice this Thursday.. I think it is great Mr. J is going to let them actually sit in with the band and watch them practice...

I believe this is the Callaway cat last rip. I'll more than likely see him when I get up there..

As far as KKpsi.. I believe the same reason he stopped the lines was the same reason he didn't allow it back during my time.. Too many cats from New Orleans that was gaining power in the band because of our numbers .. You and I both know Doc is the only one he can tolerate with having any kind of power for the most part..lol

But I wish we had it.. But we recognized Doc wasn't bringing it back.. so we ran a tight ship best we can on bus2...

This is the same thing that happened last year coming up to the SU vs Jsu game.
I guess they try to "tighten" things up for their biggest matchup. As for the percussion section,
as with any other band, they are the pulse; if they don't perform, chances are the band as a whole won't.
But I seriously doubt that it will come to that; there is no way they won't be there when the Jukes take over Mumford East.

I am sure they will have some drummers come Oct 3. When the smoke clears I would imagine the freshmen will be running the section. Since they will be considered the victims of the hazing. If not, the school going to have some angry parents of those freshmen. LOL. Just my opinion.

Hopefully it all works out and the truly guilty get removed and the rest are able to move on. All it takes is a few to mess it up for everybody. :shame:

No victims in hazing....... Both parties (The hazers and the haze-es) are guilty, because hazing is a voluntary, ILLEGAL act. If it wasn't voluntary, it would be called physical assault.

Exactly what I was getting at. Make it an integral part of the process to become a member of the band (Which would then be a 4month long process). You are in a CONSTANT audition and trial period, testing your playing ability, mental and physical toughness, potential for growth, ability to work as a member of a team and level of disipline. (Of course, taking wood would NOT be covered by these guidelines/rules/regulations/standards).
