JR...that was the very reason I ripped FAMn when they were on GameDay, bragging about being "the first GameDay on campus" while playing a second line song (:retard: ). For the life of me...I couldn't figure out why you'd wanna play "Do What You Wanna" while you're on your campus, and supposed to be representing all that is Florida.

If I really wanted to be mean about it...I could easily compare that to something Grum would've done for extra milk money.

In fact....let me go see if I can pull up the link to that thread.

(We might need another thread for these purposes.) Once that is done, then every other song that is ever written is fair game for anyone who wants to play it.

SU has been playing that song for more 15 years or so. Everyone knows it is a SU staple/signature song that represents La and the N.O. The fact is no one outside of New Orleans folks or maybe La folks even knew what the song was until SU played it everytime we got a big lead, at the end of the game....coming off the field, popping the umbrellas and stuff. It is widely respected that it was something SU decided to make a staple. Neck is a nationwide song that was played by many bands back when I marched. Cameo is not regional or city based. It was a top R&B hit. So that song too me is one of those that everyone plays. It aint something other bands had not already played.

Let's use this for example. A local artist comes out in Jackson and it is only played in that area and the Boom takes it and makes it their signature song because it represents Jackson somehow. Why would SU or a FAMU in different states wait until they see JSU doing it for years and years as their signature song and start playing it as their own signature song. As a band director I would not allow that in my band. You should have that kind of pride. I would be horrified if SU started marching in the gate to every SU game playing Get Ready. Even though that was a Temptations song that was widely played on the radio. I forgive Central State for doing it because they don't know any better. LOL. But all the bands in the SWAC and MEAC shole do.

Anyway I don't like that isht bottom line.:D

Well one thing I do know. The old head FAMU cats can't stand them playing that. I just got a text back from one of my frats and all he could do is :shame:

The routine they were doing, you can tell they have watched SU do it. That's what makes it worse. LOL. Like I said before. If they were playing SU and wanted to blow it at them. I think that's fine. But to make it one of your signature hype songs to me shows no Florida or school pride at all. I aint ripping off some other school's signature isht and make it my own. I guess that's how they were raised.:D:D

Just a quick note.

FAMU has been playing Do What Cha Wanna since 1995; its not something that just recently appeared in our book... it is a standard.

I dont know why they chose to play it back then... but it is something all of our fans love to hear.... that right along with SOS. Aint nobody in this band trying to jock anything from southern... music is music.

High Schools all across Florida play this song and I can guarantee that aint nobody thinking about Southern... Louisiana... or New Orleans in the process... its just a song.

Only a little. I am just tired of the rhetoric among bandsmen EVERYWHERE about signature songs, stolen arrangements, and who-shot-john. If you want to lock-up a song, then own the intellectual property rights and manage them. Otherwise, music is music and it is there for everyone. Let's just play it and enjoy it. Celebrate those who do it well and encourage the others to do it better.

I understand where you are with that. I appreciate the history lesson. All I am saying is that Central State, Ohio University, Northern Illinois, and North Texas all play the same song because they have people there who (I happen to know them) like the song. They don't (and shouldn't) care a rat's behind about how long anybody else has been playing it, what those schools' customs are, or why they choose to play it. It is just a song. If the copyright owners are not coming after them, then they don't care.

To thrill their crowds there are plenty of schools who play Tiger Rag like LSU, but only one that I know of that plays Rocky Top. I doubt that any other college band will ever play Rocky Top unless they want to (in a very bad move) mock the Vols. That's just the way it is. Like you say, if the (fictional) Goose Creek Tigers establlished a Div. III program in Louisiana they would be foolish to use Tiger Rag...but it would be fine for the (fictional) Mudpie State Tigers program in Mississippi.

For the record...the Boom has a signature song: Get Ready. Not even Dowell Taylor would mess with that. There are other songs that the Boom is known for - Secret Garden, Big Ballin', etc. - but there is only one signature. Anything else would be forgery.

You shole is right Juke. And if they had this song and had made it a staple. Why didn't they blow it on SU back then. I went to the SU and FAMU games in the 90s and I aint never heard them play that isht. I aint buying that either Juke. Shole aint. But it is what it is. Like I said before. It couldn't be me as the director. I know folks don't have no ownership of stuff but damn, have so self respect. You know them cats seen SU do that song for over a decade and they know it is a second line song. Aint nothing in Florida being repped with that. LOL. I guess the Florida Gators band needs to start playing the FSU tomahawk signature song. Surely Washington will play the Trojan march against USC this weekend. Maybe Ohio State will blow Hail to the Victors since aint no copyright on it. I am sure Ohio State fans will dance in stands to it when OSU band plays it. LOL.

While "Do Whatcha Wanna" is a regional song for ya'll SU don't own the damn song...stop cryin'...and you know what, we gon playin it. And yes FAMU has been playing that song for YEARS and you know this...keep it 100/100 bruh.

You may not know how it was started.. but alls being said is... that's a song that wasn't really heard much outside of New Orleans and South Louisiana.. only time it got played a whole lot was during Mardi Gras time.. it still one of the Mardi Gras staple songs... SO how no one in Florida is thinking SU, LA or New Orleans for that matter mind boggles the hell out of me... You mean to tell me yall play shcit and not know at least SOME history behind it??

A student arranged it (my old section leader). The fans loved it and it's be a staple in our book since. *shrugs*

I always get a kick out of the statement "and their alumni feel...". I'm alum and I dont hate the song and most of the alum I sit around dont hate the song. The song does exactly what it's supposed to do. Get everyone in the stadium up and in a celebratory mood. *shrugs again*

Get over it.

The thing is...it has more to do with wondering why FAMn doesn't have more pride than that, than it is about SU playing it first. Why would you "want to" represent yourself with a second line song? Ain't FAMn supposed to be "incomparable"? Prestige everywhere? Sudler winner..:idea:?..( :rolleyes: ). So, why cross two states for a staple song? I don't care who wrote it or when.

I refuse to believe a bunch of FAMn alum agree with playing a La. song since '95.

Have you ever even heard Rebirth perform this song? Do you realize how dumb it sounds saying it is a New Orleans song? What city do you think has the most history and influence in SU's band? New Orleans. It aint about ownership of a song. Michigan don't own Hail to the Victors but you don't see other bands making that song their signature song. HS bands I can understand. Also nobody said they couldn't play it. I just found it interesting that the FAMU folks like it so much. Aint no Uncle Luke they can play. LOL.

Im sorry I (or most ppl that march or marched in the 100) didnt grow up in the N.O. area... but its just a song to us... pride aint got nothing to do with that... its just a song. I guarantee if you poll most 100 members today they wont even know where it comes from... its just a song in our music book that we learn during freshman predrill.

When i first heard yall play it (and that was just a few years ago at the 2007 swac/MEAC game) i was like WOW... they play it too... then i joined in with everyone else in the band (who was probably most of their first time hearing someone else play it too) and was like "wow.... that sounds... different." IMO, compared to what we play (and used to hearing), the arrangement just sounds empty.

Based on yall's logic... I guess we shouldnt play anything outside of "Florida" music. :noidea: When I think of someone's signature song, i think of cookman's "lets go wildcats" or jsu's "get ready." When i think of southern, i think of "Neck." Yes, everyone plays that song... but imo Neck belongs to yall.

Being that alot of southern's band is based out of the greater N.O. area, yall are exposed to different things that ppl from Florida aint exposed too... one being Mardi Gras. Yes, we all hear about Mardi Gras...but for alot of us "younger" Floridians "Mardi Gras" only a saying. We dont hear "your" music over here.

I played the song in HS... I didnt know where it came from... i just know it had "Florida A&M University Marching Band" on top of the music. When i came to FAMU, i still didnt know where the song came from until i was exposed to a variety of different music... but even with that... i still had no idea southern played it.

Fact is... i honestly didnt know who southern was until I got to FAMU and was exposed to other HBCU bands. Prior to the Youtube age, the only bands that exist to alot of blk hs Floridians is FAMU, bcu and now edward-waters.

But like the cat from asu said, i guess we should be mad b/c we were the 1st blk band to do a dance routine and the 1st blk band to incorpate the "fast march" into our show... but clearly yall do both of them too.... :)

Point being... its not that serious and i think yall making to much out of nothing.

TO THIS VERY DAY I attend HBCU (and high school) football games and occasionally hear TUBA fanfares I (along with a few other frat bros) PERSONALLY created over 20 years ago. These kids dont' know me. They dont' need to. A peice of me has been planted in them and the joy I feel overwhelms me. (Even if they ARE playing it wrong. lol!)

Personally, his views regarding the song is understandable. Florida and Louisiana culture is totally different. It's the MUSIC THAT CHARMS THE SOUL. (Right Jr?) Band members dont do "history searches" when they receive sheet music. They learn the song (as instructed) and roll with it. Do you think 90% of today's bandmembers/recording artists know the orgin of the music they perform? SHIIIIIID NO!

With all the BULLISHT and IGNORANCE we see daily on these bandboards....his reasoning is quite refreshing. ESPECIALLY coming from a younger cat from a DIFFERENT REGION. It's YOUR baby because it's was conceived by YOU at YOUR house. Outside YOUR house, it's just a song. People enjoy it. It's catchy. People are diggin' it. Other bands are playin' it. Isint' that the artist's goal?

Let's take this slowly.
  1. Mardi Gras is an internationally known cultural celebration in NO.
  2. NO wants people to come from all over to experience it.
  3. Some of the people who come to do just that are musicians, arrangers, and composers, who go to parades, clubs and hear the music being played.
  4. Some of them like a tune that they hear and think, "That would be a great tune for our marching band to play."
  5. They arrange their own version of the tune and their band plays it.
These persons don't care a rats behind about SU, who did the original composition, or anything else. All they know is they heard a tune, liked it, and arranged their version of it. Simple.

Now, if you want to lock up your Mardi Gras tunes, then close the city to tourists and forbid recording of the events and the transmission thereof. Please. But let's get to the end of this rhetoric.

Yep Biff, the young Rattler made a good post for sure. Gotta respect how he went about it. We actually are not beating them up so to speak. You know how I am about this kind of stuff. No biggie. Aint like we can stop anyone from playing anything. So in saying that, I need to step back and realize folks mindsets are different than when you and I played in bands. Just couldn't do it if it was me as the director. And you are right again. Music charms the Soul. AEA!
