Offensive coordinator status up in air
School won't comment on TV report that Woody was fired Kareem Copeland • [email protected] • May 29, 2009

James Woody has been, arguably, the most criticized employee within the Jackson State athletic department over the last three years. Football fans have complained about the offensive coordinator almost since the coaching staff was hired prior to the 2006 season.

A Jackson television station reported on Wednesday that Woody has been fired, but on Thursday a school official would not confirm the report.

Calls to coach Rick Comegy and athletic director Bob Braddy were not returned.

Woody would not comment when contacted at his home, and university spokesman Wesley Peterson said the school did not have a statement regarding Woody's status.

The word around campus and in Jackson on Thursday was that Woody, who was Comegy's offensive coordinator at two previous stops , had been fired by Comegy after a meeting between the two on Wednesday.

In the past, Comegy has publicly supported Woody. At one coaches luncheon last fall, Comegy angrily cut off a fan's question and loudly defended his offensive coordinator.

That was then, this is now: On Thursday, the coaching staff met as a group and Woody was not present.

Still, even the players weren't sure what is going on with their offensive coordinator.

Sophomore receiver Keenan Tillman said players heard the rumors but weren't told anything official.

"We all respect Coach Woody as a coach," Tillman said. "People are going to butt heads from time to time. It's football. That's how life is.

Woody is not the problem. Buffet boy is. Watch this blows up in Sippi's face, just like Bell did.

Comegy owes this fan an apology now. :(

Dayum and some folk worried about a dayum legacy on TSPN.... Oh well, we know who they are talking about... Now "This" is what gives us all a real glimpse in the lives of some of the folk off of the message board. Straight comedy I swear...

I tried to told yall in the other thread that all this is doing is keeping Comedys ass employed. Woody aint the problem quiet as it kept had it not been for Woody and the dope head at Quarterback, Comedy would be recieveing food stamps. Woody aint as bad an OC as one might think. JSU problem is that there are too, too many sideline coaches trying to run things, I'm talking about the ones that hang in this forum.

Looks like someone else shares your thought about him.

Have talked to a few fans, two who were Woody supporters, and they all admitted the fan base as a whole hated Woody. All of them pointed to Woody's attitude/persona as a major issue. Play-calling was another big one.

Johnnie Daniels said that even during the title year, people gave more credit to Jimmy Oliver making plays at quarterback as opposed to Woody. Without Oliver, some believe Woody was exposed as a coach.

However, Avis Heath, who said he has tried to defend Woody, thought fans didn't consider that the offense had all new starters at every skill position last year.

Many of these side-line coaches on here bad mouth these coaches like people don't read these boards and potentially causes these folks there jobs..

Don't be fooled neither some of the same folk in here screaming they support Woody were the same ones dogging the man during this past Fall...
Too many folk on here want to be something they have no expertise in a "coach"... You would think some of these folk turned down jobs at ESPN or some isht...
