GSU struggled to a No. 24 ranking among Football Championship Subdivision programs for attendance last year, drawing an average of 11,219 a night to Robinson Stadium in 2008. But those numbers are skewed upward by homecoming, and a trip by the always-popular Jackson State to Grambling.

Other dates every year are often shockingly less well attended: See TheDerisoReport’s 10-year attendance report below.

The cliche about struggling programs is that the play in front of half-full stadiums. At Grambling, that’s basically the case: In 2007, it sold just 64 percent of the total seats at The Rob, according to the NCAA.

Jackson State, meanwhile, led all SWAC schools in home attendance, with 21,263, and brought a heavy contingency of fans to Robinson Stadium in 2008. Appallachian State paced FCS last season, by the way, with 25,161 supporters a night. (Read the NCAA’s complete report here.)

Home attendance problems are, of course, nothing new. Most of GSU’s graduates are drawn back to their far-flung hometowns after a four- or five-year stint in the piney woods of north Louisiana. And Grambling, even its glory days under Eddie Robinson, was always a road team.

Piney Woods... :lmao:

I don't know why Nick is surprised. They didn't even come to Eddie's last game. :)

He said Piney Woods because that's an accurate description... just as folks say "Jackson State University, located in the slums of Jackson, Ms."

I think he means you are some Hillbillies....no wonder you and AAMU have a rivalry. When you play, they ought to call it the Hillbilly Classic.

Hillbilly: a person from a backwoods or other remote area

Sounds just like *rambling, LA to me.

The Mighty JSU saves the day again. I didn't know we won the attendance record again.

My question is , have any other swac schools won the attendance record for the conference or our division besides JSU and SU? I thought GSU won it or maybe bama st.

I really thought GSU had more home fans than reported. Valley's fan base is larger than theirs . Damn.

This is a prime example of your weak less quality smack that directly attacks an HBCU. Weak smack that insults others and you started a discussion about how others do this, which in your opinion brings down the quality of this board.

You are sad and sick.:lol: I'd like to meet you this year.

Where did I lie... therefore how can the truth be considered an attack. Yall are located in the slums of Jackson... just as we are located in the piney woods. It is what it is...

Our attendance for JSU is always high... our fans really enjoy coming out and seeing us whup yall's azz. But I give props to your fans also... they seem to enjoy coming witnessing it too. Bobby Knight send help!!!!

Anyone that has one ounce of blood from the state of Mississippi should never call another place country or hillbillies...

TP, don't forget that we went from 500 to 5000 in attendance since joining the SWAC, which is a large improvement. However, some SWAC schools and fans cannot afford to take the long trip to Normal, AL. We cannot count on your support, therefore; we are doing ok. I told you before that you make have 40,000 in the stands, but when the funny Math is used by DFA our profit is greater than JSU.

Poor Gram,

atleast they beat a white qb last year...

However, I am proud of Gram. Yall didn't let the state punk yall into marching in the back of some La tech parade after yall won either...:lecture:

Grambling should be the least from JSU's mind, worry about what's happening with JSU's football program! Just a word to the wise!

Well, since JSU fans outnumber you, it's that we can afford to drive 5 hours but your fans can't afford to drive 5 miles.

Ruston doesn't have a Black mayor and it wasn't an election year like here in BR...

TP, 90% of schools who participate in football, have not realized that football will not return a profit. Football is something that we enjoy and cannot do without, therefore, those in charge must keep it going even at a lost year after year. Football is a necessary evil in America. BTW, when I was President of the Football Booster Club during my son high school days we were not being treated fair at our school by the AD, I demanded that we get rid of football at the Board of Education Meeting and you had to be present at the meeting to understand the comments made after my suggestion.

AAMU sponsoring football (and a band) is evil.

Great things are happening with our football program! What about yours? ...and that sad piece of offense?

Spring workouts were great! Voluntary work outs have a 100% commitment, we still have all our coaches in place and the team is coming back better than last year so we're in great shape! Nice that you asked!:D

Hey guy, how are you all affording those "voluntary" workouts by the student-athletes that you so eloquenlty refer to as "athletes?" I thought you all were 1.2million $ in debt in your athl dept, as reported through the media. (the actual source of information)

:smug: "If you can't dazzle them w/ intelligent brilliance, baffle them w/ bullshit." - usa today lol

But we are not in debt. When things are reported about AAMU it is because a disgruntied employee or formal employee. For example when tje formal president said we had a 4 milllion dollar deficit in football when he took over; what he should have said is we spent by 4 million dollars and if he had been the preisident he would have spent that much on football. But JSU has a 3million dollars shortfall and must cut. An you just cut your OC to save money. You cannot fool us, as your program take another turn for the worst.
