MUMFORD

Master Tiger Fricasseer
Saw the FCS Championship game on Friday. Overall, I thought the game was well played.

I just began to think about Grambling being SWAC and BCF champs going up against either Richmond or Montana.

Having seen the G-men several times, I think that they could fair pretty well with Montana but probably have a very difficult time with Richmond.

Any thoughts?

Man no hate at all but Richmonds was a good team on both sides of the ball. Mistake free ball.

They would have put it on Gram. And any team in the SWAC and Meac.

Grambling would lose big to both. Grambling lost to a mediocre Northwestern State that didn't make the playoff this year.

Not sure about losing "big". Gram's D was playing at high level at season's end and Dillion was coming into his own. He actually is rather similar to Richmond's QB.

You know Northwestern fired there coach and hired a new one?

They would get beat by both.
Not SMACK...........Just Fact.:noidea:
Plug in any other SWAC team including JSU in the L column as of right now.
We ain't ready to compete, playing the team's they play week after week.

Mumford, I put more stock into Grambling's season ending 10 game win streak than a early season loss to a decent Northwestern team. By season's end, I like our chances against any FBS school in the nation. Our team didn't make a lot of mistakes and our defense avg 10.4 pts a game within the conference. Some will argue that the conference is down...but look at the scores that other teams placed on each other. Then look at how they scored on Grambling. That means our defense is pretty good and good defense gives you a chance in any FCS ballgame.

But the main thing that gives me confidence is the maturation of Greg Dillon and the Gram passing game. Nick Lewis was a solid senior receiver and Kaire Thompson developed into a surehanded playmaker. Dillon also did a good job of throwing to Warren in the flats which was effective all season. That plus Dillon's playmaking and leadership gave us good qb play. Dillon's emergence made a big difference...I don't see him not giving us the plays to make us successful.

You were saying Grambling couldn't get the lead on Southern until their starting QB got hurt.

If you can play defense, run the football effectively and have a QB the can make plays then you've got a shot. The Grambling team I saw at year's end had all 3 of those components.

This is becoming one of those coulda, woulda, shoulda thread that doesn't make any sense. Win games and then talk sh@t. Right now the SWAC don't have sh@t to talk about except, how can we rebuild our programs?

LOL!!!!!

You know, maybe it's because I only had about 3-4 hours of sleep to make me think alittle more logical than some today. I dont know, but I cant see Ramblin hanging with ANY FBS schools. I cant see them haning with any top 10, top 15, or top 20 FCS school.

I dont know, maybe it's just me. :noidea:

Grambling won for the most part by not beating themselves and waiting on other teams to self destruct(a sign of good coaching). Now you can win big in the SWAC doing that. But when you face equally or more talented FCS teams that can play mistake free and have superior offensive and defensive schemes, it gets harder. I think Grambling would lose to a top-level FCS team the same way Delaware State lost to Delaware last year.

However, if Grambling decides to play these teams in the reg season and compete in the playoffs, then in 2-3 years Broadway could have them competeting on that stage.

It was 2002 or 2003...........If memory serves me correctly, a top 10 McNeese ball club had to come from behind and beat Grambling.....

Maybe that was 2002 or 2003, but I'm talking 2008. Ramblin couldnt hang this year. Yeah, they went undefeated in the SWAC, but who really challenged them? I mean really?

Bryant Lee is a talented ball player...I've been advocating that since the kids freshman season. You expect talented ball players to make plays in the game...he was hot early, especially the first quarter. But from the 2nd quarter wasn't the same and he eventually couldn't continue. Our defense takes a toll on folk...not with cheap shot, but it is a physical and intense group that knows it's assignment and makes the offense beats us. That's good football to me...yall can call it what you want, but I say that's a well coached team. Well coached teams with talent gives us a chance against those squads. Of course they would be favored...do in large part to the lack of quality play by previous teams in the conference. Don't belittle Gram's 2008 team because of what has happened in the past.

Grambling hired Broadway to beat other HBCUs, mainly Southern, but Broadway has yet to prove he can defeat schools beyond that.

McNeese State vs. Grambling

Extended Box
Sep 20, 2003 1ST 2ND 3RD 4TH FINAL
McNeese State 7 0 7 17 31
Grambling 0 13 7 0 20

Rock, that was 2003. We're talking 2008. New coach, new QB, new RBs, new WRs, etc.. 2008, Grambling would be laid waste on the field. McNeese would shut down Dillion on that scramble stuff and that would be the end of Christmas for Grambling.

That is one of the reasons why one just doesn't know. However, I did notice that if B. Lee would have stayed in the game, it looked like Southern was about to route them but then again, you never know until the game is played out.......

Why are we even arguing over this.:noidea:
The SWAC is set up to play for a conference championship only.
That is the goal our's fearless "business" leaders set up for us.
We have no incentive to get as good as any of those schools. :smh:

None of us are rgoing to get the chance to prove it cause the majority of school's in this conference could care less about playing anybody outside of an HBCU.

Why are folks attempting to label Dillon as a scrambler? He's a dual threat quarterback...the majority of his rushing attempts are designed plays. What's wrong with that? Hell, he finished second in the entire league in rushing... if that's within his skill set why not use it. Kudos to Spady for seeing it and utilizing it. But it was not like he scrambled all over the place in a helter skelter offense... far from it.

The kid from Richmond was used in the same way, except his were more power oriented running. Why is that good coaching for Richmond, but not for Grambling? Why is that good football for Richmond but not "how we do things in the SWAC?" Yet you guys ridicule the SWAC's (Gram's) ability to play a competitive game with these other schools based on "how the SWAC plays"?

Man, It really is important that Grambling plays some of these FCS schools...yall have gotten an inferiority complex and we need to save yall. Hope it's not too late!

What you are saying is not totally true......with the 7 game mandate, schools are free to schedule whom they please.......

S.U. has ULL in 2009 and McNeese in 2010
Gram has OK. State 2009 and heaven knows who else down the line....
AAMU has Jacksonville State....2009
