Jackson State already has some talent returning on defense as they attempt to return to the top of the Southwestern Athletic Conference.
Wednesday morning, they added some more depth to that defense with the commitment of Mt. San Antonio College defensive back Shamar Hawkins.

Hawkins originally committed to Northern Arizona University before deciding on JSU, according to Zach McKinnell of The Bluebloods.
Hawkins, a junior college All-American in 2023 at MSAC, registered 46 total tackles, eight pass breakups, two sacks, and 3 1/2 tackles for loss. He joins a defense that includes SWAC preseason second-team honorees Jeremiah Williams (defensive line) and Esaias Guthrie (defensive back).
The Tigers open up the 2024 season, their second under head coach T.C. Taylor, on Aug. 29 at Louisiana-Monroe. Jackson State was picked second in the SWAC East behind Alabama State.
