The priciest house in metro Birmingham could literally be fit for a king.
Valued at $11.94 million, according to Shelby County property tax records, the French-chateau style estate of former MedPartners Chief Executive Larry House has detailed ornamental features, with design work done by a firm that also worked on Buckingham Palace.
Set on more than 27 acres in Shoal Creek, the property includes vast equestrian facilities. There's also a guitar-shaped driveway, an outdoor fountain, a 38-seat movie theater and an elevator.
Inside, there are Italian marble floors, antique light fixtures and woodwork trimmed in gold leaf.
The property has been on the market for more than a year, with a current list price of $17.9 million.

A private golf course. Indoor-outdoor swimming pools with waterfalls. A dog-washing parlor. A closet just for your silver. A driveway shaped like a guitar.
This is how the other half lives.
A survey of some of the most highly-valued residences in the state found that, if you've got the money, you can have just about anything you want in your home. For Harvest's Walter Jones, a former All-Pro offensive lineman with the Seattle Seahawks, that meant a regulation NFL field, goal posts and all, next to his eight-bedroom, 12-bath home valued at $3.22 million.
For Shelby County health care executive Michael Stephens it meant an 18th century mantle over the living room fireplace and a deck made of African hardwoods usually used to build ships. His 12,304 square-foot Resting S Ranch is valued at $4.56 million.
For Mobile software executive Dennis Wilkins it meant a private planetarium under a 54-foot dome in his $4.69 million home.
The review of many of the most expensive residential properties in the state by The Birmingham News, The Huntsville Times and the Press-Register in Mobile found that the soft economy may have deflated prices, but it's done nothing to diminish the grandeur of the state's most valuable homes.
